Best Practices

The governing board members of Somerset Academy, Inc.  believe that the future of education lies in partnerships between communities, parents, and educators and their commitment to prepare lifelong learners.  Therefore Somerset Academy, Inc. upholds and educational culture where:

  • academic excellence is respected and pursued
  • teaching and learning  is innovative;
  • and caring for others is intrinsic

The “best practices” that have been established at Somerset Academy are derived from over ten years of educational success due to  experienced board members, committed parents and innovative educators. Varying from 150 students to 2,200, all Somerset programs implement the “neighborhood” school paradigm in their management structures to consistently maintain a small school environment where students can excel and parents and their community are included in the process.

The Somerset Academy family of charter schools promotes this culture through:

  • a common philosophy of high expectations for all
  • a commitment to educational excellence
  • a unique student code of excellence and discipline
  • an expectation of parental involvement
  • a collaborative managerial infrastructure
The Somerset Curriculum
Varying from College Preparation to Performing Arts to Science and Engineering,  each Somerset program follows a state standards-based curriculum unique to the community and students it serves. The constant, however, is a clear focus on high expectations for student learning and the multiple opportunities for all students to acquire requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes. All Somerset Academy schools implement research – based instructional strategies and innovative resources in technology rich environments in order to maximize learning for all students. This has proven highly successful in that each of the Somerset schools have been recognized at local and state levels and have won multiple awards annually for high academic achievement while serving a high percentage of minority students

District Strategic Plan & Accreditation Standards Assessment Report

Somerset’s governing board -- in a continuing effort to establish itself as a leader in educational programs and opportunities for its community of stakeholders -- began the visionary task of establishing itself as a District in September 2008. In an effort to unify its schools towards a single philosophy, school principals, board members, parents, and stakeholders met to formulate the District beliefs, purpose, vision and goals. The District Oversight Committee examined the results of all surveys and aligned the common thread that binds the District together. From those results we were able to develop our goals and standards which are outlined in the 2008-2013 Somerset Academy, Inc. Strategic Plan.
